Originally for Soprano and basso continuo.

Ad'alta voce all'hor così dicea:
Sdruciolando nell'aque s'affogò;
Così d'amore le fiamme amorzò.

The Sun

The sun with its beautiful mane
crowned with rays,
dressed in splendor,
had just risen from the waves to hide the stars,
when an afflicted lover,
not finding rest
left his bed, and driven by his thoughts
went wandering on
an unfamiliar path
until he arrived at a meadow
in which ran a stream.
Here, sighing to himself,
to quiet his grief
he spoke aloud:
"God of Delos,* who in heaven
brings light to the new day,
make my dear love Lilla,
out of compassion for my suffering,
give me a yes before your setting.
Make Cupid, who has wounded me
with his flame,
take pity on my state
and at least put out the fire
that now burns enclosed in my breast."
Eurillo cried in this manner,
walking along the bank
of the stream, when
from the excess of his suffering,
with his steps attuned to his thoughts,
stumbling, and the ground
still wet from the dew,
he slipped into the water and drowned;
Thus were quenched the flames of love.
