A tiranne superbe.
Onde conviene, in tante amare pene,
O soffrirle o fuggirle o tacer sempre.
Ma di che ci dogliam ch’un incostante
Ci sprezzi e ci abbandoni? Ah, frena l’ire,
Placati, incauto amante; ah, soffri e taci,
E se vuoi dona instabile punire,
Puniscila coi doni,
Castigala coi baci.

Amorous Advice
Either to suffer, or to flee, or to be silent,
but with a happy countenance
must be the offended and unwelcomed lover.
Cries, laments, bitter demonstrations
cannot change the habits or temperaments
of proud, tyrannical women; so it is advisable
in such bitter pain
to either suffer them, flee them, or ever be silent.
But why do we complain when an inconstant woman
scorns and abandons us? Ah, hold back your rage;
calm yourself, reckless lover; ah, suffer and be silent;
and if you want to punish your fickle lady,
punish her with gifts,
castigate her with kisses.
